Ransomware Kill Chain

Ransomware threat actors are the modern day prohibition gangsters. Profits from the development of ransomware are so lucrative that ransomware threat actors have learned to be more organized than ever, employing accountants, developers, network and system administrators, researchers, technical support, and customer service. Various ransomware threat actor groups form partnerships and/or specialize to increase their profitability.

Infection

The attacker access to a computer through a phishing email, an IT vendor, or weak or stolen credentials. A lightweight computer app calls home to an attacker-owned command-and-control server to provide information about the victim’s computer.

Spying

The attacker watches your business through infected computers, infecting other computers, and learn about your entire business. The attack learns about your cash flow, your security defenses, your business operations, and technical operations.

Deployment

Leveraging the information gathered, the attacker develops a custom ransomware designed and tested to defeat your existing security measures. The attacker may delete backups, destroy your ability to recover, weaken defenses, and steal data.

Ransom

The attacker demands payment for the decryption key the victim needs to recover files or risk losing them permanently. The attacker may apply pressure to the victim by posting stolen data or identifying the victim on a public website.
